Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences - Hochschule Karlsruhe (HKA) is not only one of the largest and most research-intensive universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg. With our broad spectrum of subjects from engineering, computer science, economics and design, we are able to place teaching, research and further education on a broad knowledge base. Students, teachers, researchers, but also cooperation partners and clients benefit from the interdisciplinary exchange and work. The guiding themes that guide our actions are digitalisation, sustainability and cooperation at the HKA.
We support you in all parts of your studies. When you start your studies, we offer special programs that help you organize your learning and thus lay the perfect foundation for successful studies. We work in small groups and our professors always have an open ear for you, whether you have a question about a lecture or need support with a practical project. Our study advisors, IT support, and career counselors will accompany you throughout your studies.
For us, online teaching is not an interim solution in times of pandemic but an important component of a contemporary educational concept that is didactically tested and accompanied by us. Online teaching allows students to be more flexible in terms of time and place during their studies. We use a variety of digital teaching formats for live online teaching, video recordings, and interactive collaboration in our lectures, exercises, and tutorials. We provide technical support and organizational assistance to help everyone get through their studies.
We are not a small university, but we are not a large one either. We treat each other as equals and with respect. Study areas outdoors under large umbrellas, in the library or in the faculty buildings give you the space to meet and exchange ideas with others. For the social part of academic life, students, faculty and staff meet at recurring HKA events.
Studying at HKA is based on and aimed towards practical application. Topics studied in lectures can be tried out in the laboratory.
You will carry out an internship semester and also write your final thesis at a company of your choice – possibly your future employer. We maintain a large network with companies so that you can get a suitable internship place. Our lecturers know exactly what they are talking about, because they all have ample experience working at companies.
A sailboat made of jute? A vehicle that travels almost 600 km on one liter of gasoline? A machine that mixes cocktails at the push of a button? Or a bicycle without spokes? If you have an idea for your own project as part of your studies – whether it’s sustainable, innovative or just fun – you’ll find open doors and plenty of support at HKA.
We are working hard to develop our green campus into an emission-free campus, the vision put down in our Masterplan 2030+. Everyone is invited to contribute ideas on how we can make buildings, mobility on campus, and social interaction sustainable.
Karlsruhe is the perfect place for work-live balance. While jobs are easy to find, especially in the field of IT, mobility or energy, the necessary balance is provided by quarry ponds for summertime dips, the castle gardens, the nearby Black Forest, and numerous festivals and cultural events.
