The students have access to a wide range of subjects, from Indo-European studies, Finno-Ugric studies and classical philology to English studies, American studies, Slavic studies, Romance studies and Italian studies to Scandinavian studies and comparative studies. The faculty is also home to one of the world's largest institutes for German Studies. The faculty maintains the "Graduate School Language & Literature" (which emerged from the DAAD-funded international doctoral programs in language and literature LIPP and ProLit), plays a leading role in various DFG research groups and in inter-faculty doctoral programs and maintains intensive cooperation with industry in the field of integration of language research and information technology as well as global cooperation in the field of e-learning.
In research and practice-oriented subjects such as German as a foreign language, book studies and media didactics, she prepares her students for a diverse professional life in a society in which the ability to solve transcultural problems is one of the most important key qualifications.
