History of HDM

The Stuttgart Media University (HdM) was created on September 1st, 2001 through the merger of the Stuttgart Universities for Library and Information Science (HBI) and for Print and Media (HDM).

The HBI, initially founded 60 years ago as a training center for public libraries in southern Germany, expanded its range of subjects and tasks and developed into the largest new generation for the library and information system in Germany.

The roots of HDM in training for everything to do with printing and the media go back to 1853. In 1903 the technical school for the book printing trade and the municipal trade school trained specialists in book printing. 50 years later the higher technical school for the graphic trade was established, at which a full study of printing technology was possible. The University of Applied Sciences for Printing was founded in 1972 and began training the first media technology engineers in 1979. In doing so, she set the course for expanding her range of courses.
