Faculty IV, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

The TU Berlin’s Faculty IV, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was established in 2001 through the merger of two departments. The move came about due to the rich combination of synergies between electrical engineering and computer science in the realms of instruction and research. The fields of electrical engineering and computer science are characterized by a particularly high degree of interdisciplinarity. For example, in the key social sectors such as health, energy, mobility, communication, and security, there is virtually no technology that doesn’t rely on their findings or comprise their products. This accords electrical engineering and computer science a central role in all areas of modern life, which the faculty incorporates in an immensely diverse range of research and teaching.

With around sixty professors, including twelve special professors, four endowed professorships, and more than 550 scientific staff members, Faculty IV is one the leading faculties of its kind in Germany. Our scientific productivity is reflected both in the large number of publications and the amount of external funding, which reached a record 41.1 million euros in 2014. The numerous honors awarded to the faculty’s scientists are yet another reason for our outstanding reputation. For example, three of the faculty’s professors have been presented with the prestigious Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), two professors received the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.

Currently, approximately 4,600 students are enrolled in the faculty, of which about 1,100 are from abroad. All benefit from a broad range of cutting-edge courses. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are offered in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and there is also a specialty program in Technical Computer Science. In WS 2011/12 a bachelor’s program in Business Informatics was added, and beginning in SS 2014, students can enroll in the follow-up international master’s program. In WS 2014/15 the bachelor program Digital Media & Technology was launched in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin. A consecutive master program is planned. The faculty also offers highly specialized master’s degrees in Computational Neuroscience, Automotive Systems, and ICT Innovation.

The faculty consolidates its research expertise in six research fields: Cognitive Systems, Cyber-Physical Systems, Data Analytics & Cloud, Future Internet Media & Technology, Integration Technology & Photonics and Sustainable Energy Systems & Mobility.

The faculty is part of a powerful network of research institutes. These include the following facilities, the majority of which are led by professors of the faculty: the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience (BCCN), the Berlin Daimler Center for Automotive Information Technology Innovations (DCAITI), the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH), three Fraunhofer Institutes (FOCUS, HHI, and IZM), the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB), the Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs), and the Leibniz Institute for Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics (IHP).
