The Medical Faculty was one of the four founding faculties of the University of Münster when it was established in 1780. After the university closed in the turmoil of the post-Napoleonic era and its re-establishment (1902), the "new" medical faculty followed in 1925, delayed by the First World War. Still comparatively young, it is now one of the largest and most research-intensive medical faculties in Germany. At the Westphalian Wilhelms University it also forms Faculty 5 - Medicine.
The research profile of the Medical Faculty in Münster is characterized by four clearly defined focal points, significant participation in the "Cells in Motion" cluster of excellence and other strengths such as imaging. In the area of teaching, it has acquired the reputation of an institution with high innovative strength with innovations such as a highly modular course or the "study hospital".
Over 2,000 researchers, including around 110 professors, contribute with their work to the scientific output of the medical faculty. The dean's office supports their work through intensive promotion of young talent as well as its own funding instruments, performance incentives and competitions.
The faculty's closest cooperation partner is, of course, the University Hospital Münster (UKM), a high-performance medical facility with 1,425 beds. The faculty and clinic are divided into around 70 institutes and clinics.
