Knowing what counts in practice

That is our maxim: knowledge with clear practical relevance, knowledge with direct benefit for professional reality. We impart this knowledge through teaching and we manage it through research. In focus: the central social and technological developments of our time. The challenges of tomorrow are the building blocks of our university work today.

Promote talent

We encourage young talent regardless of their social background. Performance in the respective context of life counts for us. To promote this, we develop and implement new formats for promoting talent. In the meantime, 17 universities in North Rhine-Westphalia are following our example in talent scouting, and together we work in over 350 schools.

Going new ways

Universities have the task of providing impetus for innovations. Our aim is not to follow the mainstream, but to go beyond established paths. We think outside the box. For example, we established the first basic and advanced physics course at a university in North Rhine-Westphalia instead of joining the complaint about a lack of physics lessons.

Cooperate with each other

We see ourselves as partners of (regional) actors in science and business. For example, we are working with the Bochum and Dortmund universities and numerous companies to create new solutions for energy supply and mobility in metropolitan regions. We have acquired 4.5 million euros in funding for this through the “FH Impulse” program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Personal and lively

Practical relevance and a down-to-earth attitude: This is what the Westphalian University stands for. We teach and research with enthusiasm and are always close to the students. Open doors are a matter of course for us, personal learning conditions are a prerequisite for successful studies. A degree that combines sound training with fun. You can read about how we do this on the following pages. Welcome!
