Bioniс

Bioniker/in

Bionics research nature solutions such as honeycomb technology or extremely tear-resistant spider silk, making them usable for technical applications or developing comparable materials. Except in science and teaching, they may e.g. be active in product development or process engineering.

Responsibilities

Bionics can work in different areas. In scientific research, bionics analyze, for example, particular strengths of animals in terms of physique and locomotion, crystallize the underlying principles and translate them to artificial products. Or, looking for a technical problem, they look for solutions in nature. They publish research results, teach students at universities, prepare for lectures and seminars, correct written work and take exams. Independent scientific activities open up i.d.R. only after a master's degree and a doctorate.

In development departments of the industry, they implement research results together with engineers, technicians and designers, and use biological and engineering methods and techniques to develop materials, mobility mechanisms or construction methods. Thus, e.g. Products such as self-cleaning facade paints after the water-repellent model of the lotus plant or swimming suits for professional athletes who mimic the beneficial flow behavior of sharkskin.

Typical Places of Work

Bionics find employment, for example

  • in automotive companies
  • in mechanical engineering
  • in medical technology
  • in the aerospace industry
  • in Materials Technology
  • in Research Institutes and Maritime Institutions
  • at universities

Salary

The salary level for Bioniс in Germany is: from 5172 up to 6141 EUR per month

What is it about?

Bionics are exploring natural solutions such as honeycomb technology or extremely tear-resistant spider silk, harnessing them for technical applications or developing comparable materials. Except in science and teaching, they may e.g. be active in product development or process engineering.

Scientific Research and Teaching

In laboratories, they conduct measurements and tests using chemical, biological and genetic engineering methods to explore the properties and principles of nature. They investigate metabolic processes, movements or surfaces of animal or plant models and examine whether these principles can be applied to artificial products and lead to new materials, components or processes, e.g. to ultra-light components for vehicle construction. In addition to design principles of nature, they also explore procedures, procedures and the transmission of information in nature and make them usable for process or information technology (process bionics or information bionics).

You publish the research results and make them accessible to other scientists and students. At conferences and congresses they talk about insights. They hold lectures and seminars, supervise scientific work and take exams.

For independent scientific activities i.d.R. a master's degree and a doctorate required.

Product, Process Development

When bionics analyze the properties of nature and use them as ideas for previously unspecified technical solutions to problems, this is called the "bottom-up process". For example, see The water-repellent and self-cleaning properties of the lotus plant are nowadays used in façade paints, roof tiles or textiles. Swimsuits for professional sports, aircraft surfaces or underwater coatings were modeled on the special surface of the shark skin.

Conversely, in the so-called "top-down process", bionics are specifically looking for solutions to technical problems in nature. The findings from their natural studies then transfer them to technical applications. Thus, e.g. new tire profiles after the model of spreading cat paws. Bionics formulate the deciphered biological principles and make them workable in their practical development.

In the development of products as well as processes and production processes, they collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner with other scientists and specialists in engineering, design, statics or materials science.

Leadership positions often require a master's degree.
