Chemical engineering engineers research, develop, plan, monitor and improve chemical and physical processes in industrial and laboratory facilities, particularly in the chemical industry. They also work in technical customer service or sales, among other things.
Chemical engineering engineers investigate the chemical and physical processes that take place in the operational and laboratory systems of the chemical industry and optimize them. Together with the chemists who are responsible for the development of new products, they determine the requirements for new processes and systems. The laboratory and research results must then be implemented in production processes. To do this, the engineers observe chemical reactions and the physical processes that take place during them and carry out small-scale experiments. They develop or optimize measurement and production technology processes, ensure the economical operation of the systems and the quality of the products. In addition, they develop and implement control procedures for constant operational monitoring. As operational engineers, they control and monitor production processes, maintain systems and optimize existing processes. In technical customer service, for example, they look after chemical production systems and ensure that they operate safely. When working in sales, they advise customers and create concepts and offers.

Chemical engineering engineers research, develop, plan, monitor and improve chemical and physical processes in operational and laboratory systems, particularly in the chemical industry. They also work in technical customer service or sales, among other things.
In the chemical industry, chemical engineering engineers monitor and control the manufacturing process of chemical products from raw materials such as minerals, petroleum or gas. They work in research and development departments in chemical pilot plants. There they develop the basis for transferring chemical processes from the laboratory scale to the operational scale and take on planning and design tasks in the construction of process engineering facilities. Chemical engineering engineers develop and improve, for example, manufacturing processes for nanoparticles, clusters or polymers as basic materials for nanotechnology, the use of catalytic nanoparticles or the production of fillers, pigments and coatings from nanoparticles.
In order to be able to develop new technical-chemical processes, chemical engineering engineers carry out small-scale experiments alone or in collaboration with chemists, evaluate them and transfer them from the semi-technical to the technical scale. To do this, they measure certain physical-chemical properties of the starting materials and end products and calculate or measure the thermodynamic and kinetic data of the phase and material transformations that take place. In this way, they obtain the corresponding reaction and process engineering determinants in order to allow the chemical reactions to take place on a larger scale. Chemical engineering engineers carry out material engineering experiments, for example to determine the corrosion resistance of steel materials. They then use the results of the tests to plan, design, build and commission the corresponding large-scale plants together with other specialists, e.g. process engineers.
Chemical engineering engineers advise customers on the proper use of products, test new applications taking customer requirements into account, monitor the market and provide advice on the development of new and the improvement of existing processes and products. They can also work in procurement and materials management or environmental consulting, for example.
