Civil Engineer (m/f)

Ingenieur/in - Bau

Civil engineers plan and calculate all types of construction measures and manage their execution. They are also active in the building materials industry and are involved in the development of new building materials and processes.

Responsibilities

Civil engineers are concerned with construction projects in residential, commercial, transport or hydraulic engineering or with urban planning and monument conservation. They process tender documents, clarify the basics for the respective construction project, prepare preliminary designs, implementation plans and offers. They draw up construction plans, carry out structural and structural physics calculations and decide on construction methods. During construction, they take over the construction management for the respective building object. Finally, they invoice the construction work. Civil engineers also work on interdisciplinary planning processes for spatial development, e.g. in the context of traffic planning, land use planning or water management planning. In the building materials industry, they plan, control and optimize work processes, ensure the quality of products and sell products. They are also involved in the development of new building materials and processes.

Typical Places of Work

Civil engineers find employment e.g.

  • in buildings and civil engineering
  • in architecture and engineering offices
  • in the real estate industry, e.g. with property developers or in facility management companies
  • in public service, e.g. in municipal building departments and offices
  • in companies in the building materials industry

Salary

The salary level for Civil Engineer (m/f) in Germany is: from 3112 up to 5647 EUR per month

Why is?

Civil engineers plan and calculate all types of construction measures and manage their execution. They are also active in the building materials industry and are involved in the development of new building materials and processes.

Construction planning, execution and management

Whether residential complexes or office towers, bridge structures, wind turbines or connecting roads, shipping routes or ICE lines, new commercial or industrial areas, hospitals, schools or theaters: civil engineers first take stock, i.e. they clarify the basics, the need and the requirements for a construction project. For example, data from traffic surveys and computer-aided traffic models are used to forecast the expected traffic volume on a certain section of road. Then civil engineers develop preliminary designs, manufacture models and create execution plans. Possibly. apply building data modeling (BIM) for construction planning and construction or implement it in project execution. To ensure that a construction measure fulfills the intended functions and meets the requirements for efficiency and environmental protection, civil engineers examine and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various measures. In this context, civil engineers also create tender documents for public contracts or orders from large companies.

In other phases it is all about the technical processing as well as the economical and on-time construction work. The engineers carry out extensive calculations, e.g. in terms of statics, building physics or hydromechanics. You select the appropriate processes and building materials and organize the use of machines and employees. During the construction period, they ensure compliance with safety regulations and legal requirements, e.g. with regard to the requirements of the building control authorities. Finally, the civil engineers prepare the entire construction bill.

The monitoring of ongoing operations is also one of their tasks. For example, regular monitoring and maintenance measures are necessary for the operation of supply networks or supply and disposal systems in order to ensure optimum functionality and economy.

Other uses

Civil engineers can also specialize in the analysis of building pollutants in buildings. Then they are e.g. in the planning and construction management of appropriate renovation or demolition measures and, if necessary, also as safety and health protection coordinators (SiGeKo).

If, for example, buildings need to be modernized or expanded through energetic renovation, this opens up fields of activity in the testing of structural components and the planning and implementation of innovative energy systems. If civil engineers have additional qualifications in the field of energy-saving construction in accordance with the Energy Saving Ordinance, they can issue building energy certificates.

In the building materials industry, they plan, control and optimize work processes, ensure the quality of products and sell products. They are also involved in the development of new building materials and processes.
