Responsibilities

Communication scientists advise e.g. Companies in questions of internal and external communication or offer training, for example in areas such as intercultural communication, conflict management, moderation or rhetoric. In marketing and in public relations, they use their knowledge of communication methods and ways to specifically address customer groups. In journalism, they create television or radio programs for the respective target group, write newspaper, magazine articles, books and articles for internet forums. They proofread manuscripts for publishers, develop new media products and supervise authors.

In scientific research, communication scientists deal with issues such as the influence of users by information and comments in the mass media, changes in communication behavior through social media or human-machine communication, and publish their research results. At universities they teach students, prepare lectures and seminars, correct written papers and take exams. Independent scientific activities usually open up. only after completing a master’s degree and a doctorate.

From market and opinion research to public relations

In the consulting area, they check e.g. internal communication structures of companies and develop optimization proposals. They analyze the external impact of companies, parties, politicians and advise on issues related to target group-specific image changes. They also offer training, e.g. to conduct employee interviews or on topics such as moderation, mindfulness and conflict management.

In marketing and advertising, they analyze customer requests, trends, market developments and the chances of new products on the market. You plan and design target group-oriented campaigns and analyze their success. They advise advertisers among other things. with regard to the selection and use of the media that best reach the target group.

In journalism, they write articles or reports for publishers, television, radio, the Internet or other media and analyze whether and how the respective target groups are reached and what kind of information and entertainment the recipients want. In publishing, they oversee authors and proofread and edit manuscripts. To work in journalism, a traineeship or a corresponding practical journalistic qualification is usually necessary in addition to the completed degree.

In market and opinion research, communication scientists work on issues such as on the effects of media and opinions and determine the procedure for the collection and statistical processing. They instruct interviewers in the respective study, evaluate the interview results and prepare them. A master’s degree is often required for management positions.

In scientific research and teaching

In scientific research, communication scientists examine all levels and forms of communication: This includes understanding people to people about language (verbally), but also through body language and sign language (non-verbal). Communication on social media and its effects on society as well as human-machine communication are also being researched. Communication scientists analyze how communication arises and which environmental, technical or psychological factors influence a communication process. How can it be ensured that the recipient understands a message as it is meant by the sender? How do you reach a target group? The field of work also includes media impact research: Here communication scientists analyze e.g. the influence of the mass media on voter behavior or the change in communication behavior through social media.

They record their research results in specialist articles or books, making them accessible to other scientists and students. They speak at conferences and congresses about their findings. In courses, they impart knowledge to students, supervise scientific work and take exams.

As a rule, for independent scientific activities a master's degree and a doctorate are required.
