Why is?

Ecotrophologists and nutritionists inform and advise on nutrition and food and their composition. In addition, they are involved in scientific research, such as food and beverages.

Nutrition and human care

Ecotrophology is a combination of natural sciences, economics and economics, focusing on nutrition, health care and household management. Nutrition in the narrower sense refers to the consumption of food and the intake of nutrients such as fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fiber. If the food intake does not match the need, it will affect the health.

Advise on health issues

How can a healthy diet look like? What do I have to consider as a consumer in order to be optimally supplied with the most important substances? How do you develop eating disorders and what treatment methods are there? How should I feed myself when, for example, suffering from diabetes or gout? Ecotrophologists are familiar with food and its composition and know which ingredients to combine or not. In health facilities or special counseling practices, they will inform counselors and patients on nutritional issues, develop course offerings, compile information materials and, if necessary, cook together with patients in a teaching kitchen.

In scientific research

In the field of science and research, ecotrophologists deal with questions concerning physiology, biochemistry, sociology and psychology of nutrition as well as food science. What ingredients does a food consist of? What effects do individual components have on the human body, e.g. on the digestive organs? How can foods be put together to be well tolerated? While practical experiments, experiments and test series are in the foreground in the scientific branches of ecotrophology, nutritional psychology mostly uses questionnaires as a research tool. For independent scientific activities i.d.R. a master's degree and a doctorate required.

Further fields of activity

In the food industry, ecotrophologists are mainly involved in product development and quality assurance. They design new foods, e.g. are completely free of grease or reduced in calories, streamline work processes and production processes and ensure a consistent composition during production. They develop hygiene and quality management systems for food producing and processing companies and direct their operational implementation. In catering companies and manufacturers of so-called convenience food, they are expanding their product range and advising management on nutritional issues.

In large-scale household enterprises such as hospitals, health clinics, rehabilitation centers or even hotels, they take care of the composition and quality of the food including the diet. They calculate the nutritional value and ensure a business-oriented selection and processing, train and lead employees and perform management tasks in the areas of planning and organization. In addition, they design workplaces, work structures and work processes, carry out personnel planning and develop and monitor budgets.

In consumer counseling, ecotrophologists not only provide information, give lectures and represent the interests of consumers, but also provide advice, for example, with regard to the appropriate use of energy in cooking and baking.
