Musicologists can work in different areas. In scientific research, they analyze and interpret works of vocal and instrumental music and publish research results. At universities they teach students, prepare lectures and seminars, correct written work and take exams. Independent scientific work usually only opens up after a master's degree and a doctorate.
In the area of theater, music and television production, musicologists plan and design, for example, the program for concert halls and music theaters, supervise opera and musical productions or organize music and theater festivals. In publishing, they read, check and edit manuscripts, develop new media products and supervise authors. They create articles (e.g. reports, features, music programs) or edit them editorially for online and print media, television or radio.

Research areas of historically oriented musicology are the creation, appearance and sound reproduction, the function and impact of works from European music history. Systematic musicology examines historical and current system connections, which can range from sound as an object of perception to music theoretical requirements and aesthetic judgment formation to the cultural functions of music. In instrument science and acoustics, musicologists analyze the construction, functionality and history of musical instruments, including their acoustic principles and musical performance practice. In the area of musical composition, they deal with the basics of composition, harmony, form analysis and notation.
Musicologists record research results in specialist articles or books and thus make them accessible to other scientists and students. They present their findings at conferences and congresses. You impart knowledge to students in courses, supervise academic work and take exams.
For independent academic work, a master's degree and a doctorate are usually required.
In the musical theater, musicologists can, for example, work in dramaturgy and participate in the design of the program, examine and select pieces or critically accompany productions at the theater. Dramaturgy usually also involves public relations, putting together program brochures, maintaining press contacts and informing the public about the company's activities. They can also lead workshops in which they prepare visitors for opera or concert performances, among other things.

In publishing houses they look after authors, proofread and edit manuscripts. As journalists, they research music history and cultural topics, e.g. write specialist articles or reports for television, radio or other media, put together the music program for radio stations and write concert and opera reviews for the features section. To work in journalism, a traineeship or a corresponding practical journalistic qualification is usually required in addition to a completed degree.
A master's degree is often required for management positions.
