Polymer Chemist

Polymerchemiker/in

Polymer chemists deal with the production and properties of polymers. They research, test and improve raw materials, products and manufacturing processes and develop analytical methods and technologies.

Responsibilities

Polymer chemists can work in a variety of areas. For example, in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry, they carry out series of tests to produce products such as chemicals or medications with the desired characteristics. They develop process engineering concepts for the manufacture of chemical products, manage production processes or carry out quality controls. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, they also participate in approval procedures for new or improved drugs.

In scientific research, polymer chemists develop polymers and synthesis routes or optimize existing compositions and processes and publish research results. At universities, they teach students, prepare lectures and seminars, correct written work and take exams. Independent scientific activities are usually only possible after a master's degree and a doctorate.

Typical Places of Work

Polymer chemists find employment e.g.

  • in the chemical, pharmaceutical and plastics manufacturing and processing industries
  • at research institutes, e.g. in the fields of medicine or the environment
  • at universities
  • in engineering offices
  • at environmental agencies

Salary

The salary level for Polymer Chemist in Germany is: from 5172 up to 6141 EUR per month

What is it about?

Polymer chemists deal with the production and properties of polymers. They research, test, and improve raw materials, products, and manufacturing processes, as well as develop analytical methods and technologies.

Scientific research and teaching

Polymers are used, for example, in the production of plastics, paints, coatings, high-tech materials, synthetic fibers, textile auxiliaries, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, or detergents. In research and development within industry, universities, or research institutions, polymer chemists develop or optimize substances and synthesis methods and improve existing compositions. To create a product with desired properties, they study the characteristics of chemical compounds, such as molecular structure and behavior under specific reaction conditions, e.g., changes in temperature, pressure, or the addition of acids, bases, and catalysts.

Polymer chemists document their research results in publications, making them accessible to other scientists and students. They present findings at conferences and congresses, deliver lectures and seminars, supervise academic work, and administer exams.

Independent scientific work usually requires a master's degree and a Ph.D.

From process engineering to quality assurance

Polymer chemists engaged in process development and application engineering translate laboratory research findings to industrial scale. In the so-called "scale-up" process, they seek technically feasible, economically viable, and environmentally friendly manufacturing methods for new products and test laboratory results under practical conditions. Together with process engineers and technicians, they develop specialized equipment for production.

They plan workflows in production halls, analyze and optimize processes, and lead teams. They ensure product quality through accompanying laboratory analyses of raw materials, intermediate, and final products. They apply for approval or manufacturing permits in accordance with applicable regulations, such as those for pharmaceuticals or detergents.

A master's degree is often required for leadership positions.
