Public affairs managers represent the interests of private companies, public institutions, associations, parties and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and influence decision-making processes at the interface of politics, business and society.

Responsibilities

Public affairs managers are responsible for the strategic management of political and social decision-making processes. They represent the interests of their clients, make issues visible, implement them on the agenda, facilitate an exchange with decision-makers and thus try to achieve business goals. They organize the external relationships of an organization or company, especially with political decision-makers, but also with authorities and other relevant institutions. To do this, public affairs managers analyze the position of their clients and the political, social and economic framework conditions, develop communication strategies and support their implementation. They use methods of classic press and media work as well as direct networking with opinion leaders and multipliers.

  • Analyze and prepare the interests and goals as well as the operational positions of the company or client
    • Conduct stakeholder analyses
    • Evaluate business key figures
    • Formulate viewpoints and operational interests and define economic goals
  • Elicit data and information on political, economic and social issues relevant to the industry
    • Identify political and public issues
    • Collect information on political processes and procedures, legislation, public opinion, positions of interest groups or other opinion leaders
    • Create position papers on current regulations and subsidies
    • Analyze and continuously monitor market trends
  • Support companies and clients in putting their interests on the agenda of decision-makers and, if necessary, enforcing them
    • Communication strategies and develop and work out concepts
    • Maintain contacts, e.g. with representatives of political parties, employer and employee representatives, business associations or church organizations and raise the concerns of clients
    • Advise on ways to implement local political projects or legislative initiatives
    • Plan PR activities, e.g. press interviews or the sending of press material
  • Build and maintain networks in relation to opinion leaders and multipliers
  • Present the company at events and conferences and ensure that it is noticed by the public
  • Advise specialist departments on decisions
  • Present the results of the activity at lectures, conferences or meetings or publish them in print or online
