Urban and regional planners develop drafts for environmentally friendly, social and economic local, urban and spatial development. They also draw up construction and financing plans and accompany the implementation of urban development projects.
They analyze the spatial, but also the social and economic developments of the constantly changing living environment and work out the basics, goals and interests relevant for future decisions. The inventory records the current state - such as the existing development and use, traffic, supply and disposal systems, population or commercial structure - and results in a graphic and graphic representation. This is followed by the preliminary design and draft phases, in which e.g. the draft of the land use plan for a municipality is drawn up. City and regional planners moderate discussions on current topics in their field, answer public questions in public information events, hearings and city forums, and present and explain planning projects. In the development and management of projects, they coordinate the contributions of the specialist disciplines involved in the planning and the diverse requirements on the part of different interest groups, authorities and decision-makers. In this way, they make a contribution to the settlement of conflicts of interest. In addition to the technical and time coordination, you must also keep an eye on the implementation costs for a project.

They work in urban planning, architecture, traffic planning or landscape planning offices as well as in offices for municipal advice and urban research. Classic areas of application are city planning offices, district planning offices or regional planning groups.
