Требования к школьному образованию
In-depth knowledge of the following school subjects is a good prerequisite for a successful degree:
German:
In linguistics, the sounds of speech as well as the content and structure of linguistic units are examined. Using a text, students analyze complex grammatical structures or create a phonetic transcription in order to record the pronunciation of the sounds in writing.
English, French, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish:
A large part of the linguistic literature is only available in English. Students should therefore be able to read and understand English texts without any problems. Good knowledge of at least one other foreign language is necessary in order to compare languages with one another, for example based on structural similarities or differences.

Linguistics - a science with tradition
In the 18th and 19th centuries, historical-comparative linguistics dominated. For example, the degree of relationship between Sanskrit, Greek and Latin was shown. In the 20th century, synchronic linguistics developed under the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. Here, language was not examined according to historical criteria, but from the perspective of language as a system of signs, excluding any extra-linguistic aspects. Noam Chomsky then coined the term generative grammar in the 1960s. Chomsky's primary interest was no longer in describing language as a system, but in generating grammatically correct sentences based on cognitively anchored formation rules.
Modern linguistics
In the last 50 years, linguistics has split into numerous sub-disciplines. These include, for example, sociolinguistics, which focuses on the social dimension of language, and psycholinguistics, which questions the psychological basis of language ability. The most recent trends include feminist linguistics, ecolinguistics and political linguistics.
