Требования к школьному образованию
In-depth knowledge of the following school subjects is a good prerequisite for a successful course of study:
Geography:
Existing knowledge in this area makes it easier to access study content from general physical geography, for example. Here, students learn, among other things, to understand the genesis and variety of forms of the landscape in their interaction and to identify the geocomponents of a natural area.
Biology:
The course places emphasis on botanical and, to some extent, zoological species knowledge. It is easier with appropriate prior knowledge.
Mathematics:
Application-related mathematics is required. You should be able to handle differential, integral, infinitesimal and vector calculus as well as statistical methods.

Ситуация с обучением
You should be prepared for the following conditions and requirements:
- Courses: attend lectures and seminars in the university's lecture halls and seminar rooms during the semester; if necessary, take part in online courses at home
- Practical exercises: e.g. carry out botanical determinations in the field or analyze an ecosystem using bioindicators
- Independent work: prepare and follow up on courses, research in libraries, prepare presentations, write homework (also during the lecture-free period)
- Organization: plan your studies independently within the framework of the specified study structure, adhere to specified deadlines and study times, complete study and examination work on time (self-discipline and organizational talent required)
- Career preparation: complete internships if necessary (e.g. in nature conservation and land use authorities or in research institutions focused on landscape ecology), prepare for starting your career

Сферы деятельности
For bachelor's graduates in the field of landscape ecology and nature conservation, there are various fields of activity in the private sector and in the public sector, e.g. forestry and hunting, landscape management or assessment and expert work.
Typical career after graduation
Landscape ecologists take on tasks in landscape and nature conservation management. They develop concepts for landscape ecology, map and evaluate biotopes and organize or monitor measures to protect them. In protected areas, on agricultural land or in residential areas, they monitor local biodiversity and analyze water and soil samples. They also draw up usage and settlement development plans and carry out environmental impact assessments. Landscape ecologists also develop concepts for nature-based, "soft" tourism or for the planning and implementation of measures in the field of environmental education.
Последующее образование
Bachelor graduates in the field of landscape ecology, nature conservation can continue their studies in a further subject, e.g. landscape ecology, nature conservation or environmental science, and thereby expand their professional and career opportunities.
- Forestry, forestry (advanced)
- Geoecology (advanced)
- Landscape ecology, nature conservation (advanced)
- Environmental science (advanced)
- Water and soil management, water technology (advanced)
Развитие предметной области
Establishment of the subject area
In a time of increasing ecological threats, it is becoming increasingly important to impart knowledge and skills with which landscape changes can be assessed and, if necessary, corrected. The importance of landscape ecology research results for environmental policy increased particularly after the amendment of the Federal Nature Conservation Act in 1971. In order to meet the demand for academically trained experts in the field of landscape ecology and nature conservation, an independent research discipline was created within the environmental engineering degree programs.
Development of the subject area
Originally, landscape ecology dealt with the interaction between nature and the environment. A more recent development of the subject area comes from agriculture and forestry and was triggered primarily by concerns about environmental protection. Problem areas here include soil erosion, material balance, over-fertilization and water protection. The subject area, which was originally founded on geography and soil cultivation, now forms an interface between geosciences, agricultural sciences and life sciences as well as the applied fields of nature conservation and landscape planning. Increasingly, the study of landscape ecology and nature conservation also teaches humanities skills, e.g. from the field of ethics.
