The subject of Art History examines the genesis, the social function and the cultural significance of artistic artifacts and aesthetically designed spaces from the early Middle Ages up to the present day. Alongside architecture and the classical visual arts of painting, sculpture, handicrafts and textile arts, teaching also encompasses central types of contemporary art such as photography and new media. The main areas of focus in terms of research and teaching include art and material culture in Italy since the early modern period, French art of the 18th and 19th century, as well as German architecture and art of the Middle Ages, the early modern period and the 20th century.
Students are introduced to a wide range of different methodological approaches which are constantly evolving and which reflect the important position of the subject within the humanities. Students also learn about the creative processes of individual artists, the theoretical perception of art and artists, and the function of certain artifacts in the cultural context of an era. In geographical terms, not only Central, Northern and Eastern Europe are incorporated into the curriculum, but also the Mediterranean region and the (North) American continent. The study of transcultural exchange processes between Europe, Asia and the American continent is also becoming increasingly important.
The Bachelor's program can be combined with all other two-subject Bachelor's programs and offers students a wide range of options when it comes to deciding how they want to structure their timetable. The Bachelor of Arts in Art History is a scientifically oriented degree course. In regard to preparing students for their future careers, students regularly have the chance to participate in events hosted by renowned experts from the fields of art and culture.
