Dentistry

University of Greifswald

Undergraduate Winter Semester

Dentistry deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dental, oral and jaw diseases, oral rehabilitation with dentures and the regulation of dental and jaw anomalies. The program is divided into a preclinical and a clinical study, each lasting 5 semesters. The dentist is trained scientifically and practically first in the phantom (simulation units) and in the last four semesters on the patient. A special focus of the training is the teaching and learning program "The Early Patient Contact".

The main idea behind the study of dentistry at the University of Greifswald is combined with the research and teaching projects of Community Dentistry and Medicine. Oral health and disease are linked in many ways to general health issues of health and disease - but social and socio-psychological aspects of healthy and ill people also play a crucial role.

The students of dentistry should be given a deeper understanding of health and illness right from the beginning and get to know frequent illnesses and the sick people early within the framework of the teaching program "The Early Patient Contact". In this way, the students are prepared step by step for the clinical tasks on the patient. The early contact with sick and needy people in the region means in practice that not only the tooth or the oral cavity, but the ill person and the diverse conditions of health and illness in the center of study. Prerequisite is a very close link with the contents of medical studies. Wherever possible, students of dentistry will be taught together with the medical profession. A dental treatment unit has been set up in the "comprehensible" teaching and learning center.
