The study "Dentistry" at the state "FAU - University of Erlangen-Nuremberg" has a standard study period of 11 semesters and ends with the degree "State Examination". The location of the study is Erlangen.
The study of dentistry prepares for the profession of dentist. After obtaining the approbation the dentist is practically or scientifically active. A further two-year activity as an assistant in a clinic or practice is required for admission by the statutory health insurance companies ("POS" approval). Specialization possibilities are the altogether 4-years further education to the "dentist for orthodontics" and to the "dentist, Oralchirurgie" and - after an additionally completed study of the medicine - the training to the specialist for maxillofacial surgery. Of the 92,678 registered dentists, over 52,729 (57%) work as established dentists (as of 31.12.2015), 8,394 of them in Bavaria. The Federal Chamber of Dentists registers 18,696 (20%) assistants, representatives, salaried dentists, civil servants and civil servants. 21,253 dentists (23%) did not engage in any dental work at the end of 2015. The dentist's practice will continue to be the most important field of dentists in the future, despite increasing numbers of dentists. The study of dentistry is a pure study, which qualifies after completion to the profession dentist. It therefore hardly forms a starting point for occupational mobility.
