Mechanical engineers supply complex technical products that are of great significance for all sectors of business and play a large role in determining Germany's overall economic performance. In 2014 approximately one million people were employed at Germany's numerous mid-size companies that supply machines and manufacturing systems.
The undergraduate course in Mechanical Engineering begins with the basics of the discipline, and students can then pursue one of three areas of specialization. The General Mechanical Engineering specialization topic includes the areas of design and industrial manufacturing, that is, the methods required to manufacture a product. The Vehicle Systems Engineering specialization offers a wide variety of modules from the fields of automotive engineering and automobile components. The Optics & Microengineering specialization area focuses on the design and manufacturing of components for the optics industry and microtechnology.
