Musicology (with Additional Artistic Qualification)

Paderborn University

Undergraduate Winter Semester

Studying in the Detmold bachelor's degree in musicology combines academic work with music in all its diversity and artistic training in the form of instrumental or vocal lessons (possibly also conducting or composition / music theory).

Artistic and scientific studies complement each other in this way to form a comprehensive music-related bachelor's degree. The course is the responsibility of the University of Paderborn and is carried out in cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. The artistic-musical course at the conservatory accounts for about a quarter of the course. The main part is formed by musicology and music theory courses on the history of music from antiquity to the present day, on musicology work, set theory and analysis as well as on the diverse cultural and systematic fields of musicology. Another special feature of the course is the high proportion of practice-related practice in the form of project work, internships and courses on (digital) editing, presentation and mediation techniques. The wide range of courses offered by the musicology seminar, the University of Paderborn and the University of Music opens up extensive options for interest-based, individual studies, and there are very good opportunities to spend a semester abroad.

The six-semester course ends with a bachelor's thesis in musicology and qualifies for a wide range of music and culture-related professional fields as well as for taking up a relevant master's degree.

A bachelor's degree in musicology is also possible in combination with a second cultural studies subject instead of the additional artistic qualification; see two-subject Bachelor with a major in musicology.
