Программа обучения "Microbiology" в Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg

Microbiology

The aim of the "Microbiology" degree is the in-depth training of qualified scientists in the fields of knowledge and methods of modern microbiology and its fields of application. The training is research-oriented. In this course, the students should be able to gain scientific knowledge independently and in cooperation with others and to recognize their importance for society and professional practice. The qualification is based on a balanced mixture of theory and practice; the specializations contain important components of the necessary knowledge and skills for successful professional activity in the diverse fields of modern microbiology.

The language of instruction is English.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Microbiology"

Thanks to their qualifications, microbiologists can work in professions in the fields of molecular biology, biotechnology, environmental protection, food microbiology and even criminology. Due to the expanding research activities, doctoral positions are also available at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Sea (ICBM).

Учебный план программы обучения "Microbiology"

In the first two semesters, modules for in-depth study (24 credit points), more practical modules (24 credit points) and profile-forming specializations (12 credit points) are offered in parallel. In the third semester, two research projects are worked on, which can also be carried out abroad. The specialization continues. The final Master's thesis (30 credit points) documents the ability to independently work on a defined topic scientifically.

Large modules with lectures, seminars, exercises and a high practical component. All modules are offered in English. The students are involved in research activities right from the start.

The course has both fundamental and applied aspects that open up career prospects in science, industry and public authorities. However, the main focus of the master's program is the research-oriented training of students to become qualified microbiologists. By independently carrying out small research projects and working in well-supervised international teams, students learn to deal comprehensively with scientific issues and their investigation. In this way, they acquire in-depth professional, methodical and social skills, which form the basis for a successful start in professional life.

In addition to lectures and seminars, the Master's degree in Microbiology includes various laboratory internships and excursions to institutions with a microbiological orientation.

In the first year (1st and 2nd semester) there is compulsory training for all students in two core modules. In the modules Physiology and Diversity of Microorganisms and Molecular Mechanisms and Interactions, the basic knowledge of microbiology acquired in the previous bachelor's degree is deepened. These predominantly theoretical modules are complemented by two- and four-week internships (profile modules and main modules) accompanied by seminars. The goals of these internships are the implementation of the basics learned, the acquisition of well-founded practical skills and the deepening of individual aspects. With the option of choosing a topic from five different areas, students can focus on specific research areas at an early stage.

In the 3rd semester, two six-week research projects (Research Projects) are worked on independently by individual students. These projects relate to different questions of current research projects and are offered continuously by all working groups involved in the course. The students are supervised in the implementation of the projects by a lecturer and usually also by a doctoral student. In general, students are supported in carrying out one of the two research projects at another scientific institution in Germany or abroad. The second project should offer the opportunity to lay the foundations for the master's thesis. The results of the research projects are documented in a protocol of high scientific quality and presented and discussed in accompanying seminars. In the regularly organized institute colloquia, the students come into contact with proven external researchers. Further knowledge is imparted on site on excursions and ship assignments.

The final phase (4th semester) consists of the independent preparation of the scientific master's thesis and its adequate presentation and discussion. As a rule, the master's thesis is completed within a period of 5 months. This work is to be presented in a lecture open to the university and discussed with the scientists involved. With the master's thesis and the lecture, the students show that they can work on a scientific topic independently and communicate it clearly.
