Physics is the basis of all natural sciences up to and including medicine. It has the task of experimentally exploring the laws of the world in all their complexity and diversity from the unimaginably small scale of elementary particles to the immense scale of the universe, to grasp them theoretically and, if possible, to show applications. The concrete problems that physics deals with experimentally and theoretically change over time, as the experimental and theoretical requirements must always be met in order to be able to address certain questions in a satisfactory manner. This dynamic aspect guarantees that physics is a constantly evolving science that succeeds in deciphering the fundamental mechanisms of increasingly complex natural processes using modern methods. The constant further development of experimental and theoretical methods in physics means that more and more new areas of nature are becoming accessible to scientific research - areas that lie beyond the limits of traditional physics. It is increasingly possible to elucidate fundamental physical mechanisms that can only be described phenomenologically in related sciences such as chemistry, biology and medicine.
Physics therefore fulfills a central bridging function among the natural sciences in a special way. The Faculty of Physics at LMU has therefore consistently set itself the goal of researching the physical principles of scientific processes. With this orientation, physics at the LMU is positioned complementarily to the orientation of other institutions where the application aspect or technical usability is clearly in the foreground.
Studying physics also means dealing with technologies today that will only be used in the future. In this respect, physics training makes a decisive contribution to not only enabling young people to find their way in the information and knowledge society, but also actively helping to shape and develop it further.
