Economics deals with macroeconomic processes. It analyzes, among other things, the preconditions for economic growth, the causes of unemployment, the determinants of price developments, and the goals and effects of government activity. In a market economy, the main focus is on the functioning of markets, but also on the conditions under which market failure occurs and government intervention is required. In addition, economics deals with the economic relations between states.
In the bachelor's programme in economics at the Faculty of Business and Economics, students can, in addition to a sound basic education in economics and business administration as well as empirical methods, choose to specialize in a variety of areas such as international trade and production, development economics, behavioral economics, or quantitative methods. Courses taught in English (including by guest lecturers), courses in Business English and the possibility of a semester abroad round off the international education.
The bachelor's program in economics provides you with the technical and methodological knowledge to analyze the increasing international integration of national economies and to understand the basics of economic policy decisions by governments and international organizations.
For economies, globalization means increasing competition on world markets. Traditionally strong export nations such as Germany are facing growing challenges in terms of their competitiveness. Many goods are no longer produced entirely in one place, but their individual components are produced in different parts of the world and assembled in other places. As a result, the economies of the individual countries are much more closely intertwined. This results in challenges, such as the creation of rules for global trade in goods or financial services, which must be solved jointly by national and international economic actors.
For these new challenges, companies, associations, state institutions and international organizations are looking for specialists who understand the complexity of modern economies and can make decisions based on this.
