The master program "Applied Cultural Science and Cultural Semiotics" deals both theoretically and practically with the various dimensions of human communication. The students acquire in-depth knowledge of culture, media culture and cultural history with a focus on phenomena and structures of globalized cultures and media, of collective memory, cognitive concepts and communicative behavior. By focusing on methods of semiotic analytical and empirical cultural studies, students are able to analytically grasp and reflect on current cultural phenomena as well as cultural dynamics, as well as penetrate the associated sign-based forms of communication with a view to their optimization.
The program is aimed at students of a humanities or cultural studies bachelor's degree program, who are looking for a further study of cultural semiotics with a focus on culture and media science and who want to orientate themselves in a practice-oriented manner with regard to a desired occupational field. This is precisely what the degree program maintains a concrete cooperation with institutions and experts from culture, creative industries, media and intercultural as well as social work. Furthermore, the teaching and traineeship offer of the University of Potsdam focuses on the analytical penetration and application-oriented optimization of culturally shaped forms and processes of communication, which are examined and developed in a multi-perspective way against the backdrop of semiotic models. For example, students use current theories of metaphorical concepts to analyze advertising, media coverage or populist interpretations of social events in terms of their concrete forms of expression and their cognitive effects. The associated analytical findings can in turn be used for the production of advertising or political education. Additional compulsory elective modules in American Studies, Slavic Studies, Visual Studies and Linguistics provide additional insight into the theory and practice of cultural studies as well as application-oriented semiotic-linguistic work.
