Data science, the science of data, comprises a bundle from various disciplines such as computer science, mathematics, business administration and statistics. In general, data science is about typically examining very extensive and diverse data using scientific methods in order to obtain information that can be used profitably in the context of companies and organizations. The Data Science course provides application-oriented basic skills from the subjects of mathematics and computer science, in particular statistics and probability models, AI and machine learning, data storage, programming and software development. Cutting-edge topics that are specific to data scientists, such as cloud computing, data mining and big data, deepen this portfolio.

The Data Science course offers you a broad range of studies. You will learn skills to efficiently analyze large amounts of both structured and unstructured data of all kinds using suitable technologies. In addition to technical and methodological skills in fields such as statistics, data analysis and machine learning, programming languages ​​and algorithms, social skills such as teamwork are also taught. After completing the course, you are also able to analyze research questions using suitable methods.

In practice-oriented courses, we provide you with the relevant specialist knowledge. In lecture-related projects, you develop solutions and integrate them back into overall projects. Modern computer labs are available for these tasks. Within the scope of optional subjects, you have the opportunity to focus on your own personal preferences and to deal with interesting topics beyond your own subject. In addition to the courses, the course offers lectures by company representatives and excursions to give you a broad insight into the professional field of data science.

With a Bachelor's degree in Data Science, you have many positions in industry and business, in the service sector and in the public service. Graduates are primarily qualified for work as a data scientist and also for work as a computer scientist in various fields of business, industry, administration and science. After the general part of the SPO at Hochschule Aalen and the special part of the SPO, all students must complete a practical semester in the 5th semester. The practical study semester comprises at least 95 attendance days. It is supplemented by compulsory courses in the fourth semester.

The Bachelor's degree in Data Science at Aalen University is a full-time course. The contents of the lectures are supplemented by exercises, tutorials and project work. You will gain practical experience during a practical semester in the main course. If you are interested, university cooperation enables a study semester abroad.

    The latest buzzword in society and economy is digitalisation: Everybody talks about the digitalisation of society, the digitalisation in manufacturing/industry 4.0 and digital business models. At this point, a smart phone interface is a stronger selling point for a car than a turbo charger or a motor boasting four-valve technology.

    This digitalisation of everything is mainly based on two technical fields:

    • More and more every-day products – from high-quality to low-cost are equipped with mini- and microcomputers - also known as embedded systems.
    • These embedded systems execute programs which generateprocess and  transfer data. Data that is then received and further processed by other computers.

    The Faculty Electrical Engineering and Computer Science offers studies in both embedded systems and data processing. And a lot more! If it wasn’t for the software installed on servers and terminals (from desktop computers and smart phones to smart watches), the large web servers of social networks couldn't fulfil the requests. These large systems require programming just as microcomputers in embedded systems.

    Another issue we are dedicated to at the Faculty Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is the energy transition. This transition is mainly based on electrical power, which makes electrical engineering play a crucial part in this social, economic and technical change. Power-to-gasrenewable energies and electric drives are mere a few examples of future technologies that will keep the world going around.
