Faculty of Art and Design

Since the faculty was founded, the project has been at the center of teaching, so that knowledge and skills are imparted where they are needed: no dry swimming, but trying out examples.

The establishment of the Faculty of Design in autumn 1993 by Lucius Burckhardt is to be seen as the consequent result of considerations and concepts for creative practice and its communication.

In Weimar, the capital of German classical music, in addition to the preservation of established cultural assets, new forms of art teaching were promoted, the most outstanding and innovative of which was the Bauhaus.

80 years after the establishment of this world-famous institution, however, it is important to address the essential differences in teaching in the light of the present. The renouncement of the last and generally valid truths and proposed solutions, which has been evident for several decades, demands more than ever the creative minds to rethink the meaning and purpose of their initiatives and measures and to find the optimal use of their means.

This increased awareness of the problem can be observed in all areas, from the so-called applied areas to "free" art, from the shaping of everyday culture to the incarnation of intellectual and philosophical content. In many cases, the subject matter and media possibilities are also cross-border, similar or even identical.

Since April 1, 2016, the newly structured faculty has been renamed the Faculty of Art and Design.
