With currently 24 professorships and a total of over 100 teachers, the department is one of the larger locations for educational science in the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the student statistics, around 7,100 students are currently enrolled in one of the courses in the Department of Education. Studies and teaching at the department aim to provide qualifications related to both research and the professional field. The faculty stands for a program of integrating different educational sub-disciplines from the perspective of research and teaching that is reflected in social science. The department is continuously involved in the interdisciplinary discourse. The faculty is committed to responsible participation in shaping the discipline, profession and society at regional, national and international level. It comprises five scientific units: the Institute for General Education, the Institute for Education for Elementary and Primary School, the Institute for Education for Secondary School, the Institute for Special Education and the Institute for Social Education and Adult Education.
