With nearly 7500 employees, the Johannes Gutenberg University Medical Center is the second largest employer in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. Aside from providing regional and national health care, biomedical research (basic research, translational research and clinical trials), as well as the training of medical and dental students are central responsibilities of academic medicine.

The mission of this Office is to enhance the international stature of our Medical Center by fostering internationally recognized research and high quality teaching.

The Johannes Gutenberg University Medical School is the only training center for medicine and dentistry in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. With currently more than 3,300 students, it is among the largest in the nation.

The high quality of the academic program of the Medical School is demonstrated inter alia by students’ high performance on the State Exams and positive course evaluations. The curriculum is being continuously improved by various quality assurance and funding measures.

The research activities of the Johannes Gutenberg University Medical Center cover a broad spectrum of subjects, with core competencies (research foci) in the areas of cardiovascular research, immunology and neuroscience. Another newly developed research focus combines surgical competency with expertise in material sciences. The high standard of research is documented by a large number of excellent publications and steadily increasing third-party funding. Both nationally and internationally, the Johannes Gutenberg University Medical Center operates at the forefront of medical research.
