With its founding as the original electoral academy of painters and sculptors in 1757, the Mainz Art Academy is one of the most traditional in the German-speaking world. Today it is integrated into the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz.
With currently around 180 students, the art college offers a wide range of qualification opportunities based on current artistic and design requirements in a clear framework.
The art college today offers two courses: “Fine Art” and “Teaching for Fine Arts at High Schools”. It is important to us that teaching students receive training at the same high artistic level as liberal arts students.
With several painting and sculpture classes, classes for drawing, film, photography and media art, it offers students a wide range of opportunities for artistic development. In the numerous artistic workshops (printmaking, wood and metal workshop, painting technology, photo and media laboratory), knowledge of the material and application areas of the respective work area is imparted and the necessary craftsmanship and technical skills are trained.
The Mainz Art School at the Johannes Gutenberg University has the right to award doctorates in art theory and art education.
As an active part of the cultural public, the art school's teaching and research department regularly presents exhibitions and projects, initiates debates and initiates discussions and developments.
There are various partnerships with foreign universities, which are documented in teaching assignments for international artists as well as in the exchange and collaboration between teachers and students in an international context.
