Quality and innovation by tradition – our guiding principle is inspired by Erasmus Kittler, who founded our department in 1882 and thus established electrical engineering in the engineering sciences. Today, the department etit covers all fields of modern electrical and information engineering and is one of Germany's leading institutions due to its international orientation and interdisciplinary networking.

Our research today shapes the world of tomorrow

Accelerators on a chip, energy-saving computer systems for artificial intelligence, intelligent systems – from self-driving cars to personalized tumor radiation -, environmentally friendly electricity highways laid beneath the earth to protect the landscape, lighting systems that know the biorhythms of the human body and biophotonic detection of viruses such as SARS-COV2: what we research today will change the world tomorrow.

Our scientists deal with future questions for the world of tomorrow:

• How must electrotechnical components and systems be built so that they not only function, but also do so in an energy-efficient manner and meet the increased requirements of artificial intelligence?
• What must the energy network of the future look like? How can electricity from renewable energy sources be transported over long distances to where it is needed in a way that protects the environment and the landscape?
• How can electrotechnical systems and methods help to detect diseases and treat people individually?
• How do electrotechnical devices such as computers and smartphones communicate intelligently with each other to form the Internet of the future? How do they function “resiliently” and reliably under the most difficult conditions, such as disaster situations?

These questions and many more are dealt with in an interdisciplinary and problem-oriented way in our main research areas.
