18 professors in 11 departments ensure a wide range of courses, supported by several private lecturers and scientists from external research institutes who teach at our faculty. More than 100 academic and non-academic employees work in all areas of research and teaching.

The faculty started teaching in 1970. In research, the focus was initially on solid-state physics and particle physics, followed by accelerator physics in 1985, which operates the Dortmund electron storage ring DELTA in the center for synchrotron radiation.

A special feature of the physics course in Dortmund is the integrated physics course in the bachelor’s degree, in which theoretical and experimental physics are taught jointly by two university professors from the two subject areas.

In addition to prospective physicists and teachers, we also train students from many other departments who have physics as a minor, which is compulsory in most engineering and chemistry, for example.
