The Faculty of Arts, with around 6,500 students, offers an appropriately broad range of research-based, innovative courses. Teaching and research - based on their independence from the dictation of immediate usability - programmatically reflect the increasing networking of science and society. Against this background, the cultural and social science principle of practical reflection is of particular importance: This is not about training in the sense of technical-practical competence acquisition, but rather about empirically and theoretically sound research and teaching, which are understood from the different disciplinary perspectives learns how the living environment is communicatively designed by those involved. This includes the central question of how communication, culture and society change historically under the respective conditions of their mediatization - in the aesthetic, linguistic (also multilingual), cultural (also intercultural), institutional (also scientific) and media-technical (at the same time sociocultural) sense in order to be able to reflect on it ethically and react practically.
In this sense, students of the Faculty of Philosophy are enabled to professionally use methods and theories in the fields of language and media, literature, culture and history, social sciences, theologies and philosophy to work on scientific and social issues. In addition to the academic qualification for fruitful participation in social and political life and for successful professional careers in science and education, in cultural operations, media management and communication professions, in politics and administration at regional, national and international level, the faculty enables the acquisition of additional qualifications and opens towards society through academic education and training offers. The backbone for high-quality, research-based courses is the active participation of teachers in the research discourse in their subjects.
