Engineer – Microelectronics

Ingenieur/in - Mikroelektronik

Microelectronic engineers research, develop and produce e.g. Microprocessors, memory chips, integrated circuits, components for machine or motor controls, for example for industrial manufacturing technology, medical and communications technology or consumer electronics.

Responsibilities

Microelectronic engineers plan, design and construct small to very small parts, circuits or systems that e.g. in communication technology, medical technology or in automotive engineering. Above all, they calculate and test components or complete devices and develop new or improved production processes. Depending on the area of activity, they also manage and monitor production. They control and coordinate the work processes and ensure that energy, machines and systems are used economically. For quality assurance and testing, they develop test and inspection procedures and monitor the results. In customer service, they conduct user training or advise companies on complex high-tech devices. In sales, they create offers and submit them to customers. They also calculate costs and prepare accounts, instruct employees and participate in personnel decisions.

Typical Places of Work

Microelectronic engineers find employment e.g.

  • in companies in the electrical and IT industry
  • at manufacturers of electromedical devices and motor vehicles
  • in engineering offices for technical planning
  • in research and development

Salary

The salary level for Engineer – Microelectronics in Germany is: from 4604 up to 5819 EUR per month

Why is?

Microelectronic engineers research, develop and produce e.g. Microprocessors, memory chips, integrated circuits, components for machine or motor controls, for example for industrial manufacturing technology, medical and communications technology or consumer electronics.

Solutions in the smallest of spaces

In the field of microelectronics, microelectronics engineers research, develop, produce and optimize integrated circuits in which numerous components are placed on a semiconductor chip at millimeter intervals. You use various methods, e.g. thin-film technology, by means of which they evaporate conductive and non-conductive layers in a high vacuum on glass or ceramic plates. Using semiconductor block technology, they make circuits from a single crystal, e.g. made of silicon. In the field of microsystem technology, they develop and manufacture devices, systems, systems and processes in which electronic, mechanical and optical functions are integrated in the smallest space. The development of software for the design of new circuits can also be part of your tasks.

Microelectronic engineers often work in particle-free cleanrooms, because only in this environment can the functional layers and structures of semiconductor and microsystem technology be produced.

Diverse areas of application

In addition to development and design, the engineers can work in preparation for manufacture, assembly and commissioning, quality assurance and testing, as well as in sales and marketing. As developers, they apply their colleagues' research results and incorporate them into their development plans. In production, they monitor, control and optimize the manufacturing process, including quality assurance. And in sales they advise and explain complex high-tech devices to customers. They work with test centers such as the VDE test and certification institute when it comes to approval or recognition e.g. for components and devices in medical technology, printed circuit board technology or microsystem technology. In addition, microelectronic engineers work, for example, as technology experts in the field of microstructuring and mechanical precision machining and explore new effects and materials.
