Engineer – Microsystem Technology

Ingenieur/in - Mikrosystemtechnik

Engineers in microsystems technology develop and manufacture devices and systems that integrate electronic, mechanical and optical functions in the smallest of spaces. In addition, they work in production planning and control, quality assurance, customer service or sales.

Responsibilities

Microsystems engineering engineers design devices, systems and processes for miniaturized technical systems and corresponding technologies. In doing so, they integrate electronic, mechanical and optical components in systems that independently collect, evaluate or carry out data. These can be memory elements of chip cards, but also solar cells, medical devices or sensors for digital cameras. Microsystem engineers transfer their developments to industrial production. Here they plan, monitor and optimize the production processes, which require the highest precision due to the size and sensitivity of the microchips, solar cells or sensors. They also take on quality assurance. They advise companies in customer service, in sales they create offers and submit them to customers.

Typical Places of Work

Engineers of microsystems technology find employment e.g.

  • at manufacturers of electronic components such as semiconductors, microcircuits or chips
  • at manufacturers of devices and equipment for IT technology
  • at manufacturers of industrial process control devices, electromedical or optical and photographic devices
  • in engineering offices, research and development facilities

Salary

The salary level for Engineer – Microsystem Technology in Germany is: from 4604 up to 5819 EUR per month

Why is?

Engineers in microsystems technology develop and manufacture devices and systems that integrate electronic, mechanical and optical functions in the smallest of spaces. In addition, they work in production planning and control, quality assurance, customer service or sales.

Development

Microsystem engineers develop systems that can react independently to their environment. If the sensor registers an impact on the microchip of an airbag, it processes this signal electrically, measures it, evaluates the result and then controls the actuator that triggers the airbag. In research and development, the engineers are looking for ways to use the potential of microsystem technology in the best possible way. They are supported by CAD technology. For example, if a new navigation system is to be developed, they carry out tests and develop simulation models, plans and prototypes.

Production

In the microsystems technology manufacturing companies, the engineers ensure that the production process runs smoothly. They plan the deployment of employees, control the manufacturing and assembly facilities and optimize production. The basis for the production of microchips and solar cells are circular silicon wafers, so-called wafers, on which e.g. Photosensitive lacquers are applied or conductor tracks are etched. Engineers of microsystems technology check every production step, because defects on the wafer reproduce quickly and lead to failures. With the scanning electron microscope, but also with spectroscopic or thermoelectric methods, you can take a close look at the individual components on the wafer. Since even the smallest dust particles can cause damage to the highly sensitive chips, this work takes place in the clean room in dust-free air.

Other uses

In addition, microsystem engineers can work in sales or technical advice. Here they advise customers on the purchase of microsystem technology products and introduce them to the use of new systems. They create offers and submit them to the customer.
