Film editors use scripts, treatments or storyboards to find out about the plot or the course of a contribution. You get an overview of the rotated material and structure it using flow charts. Then they create the rough and fine cut and finally the final version, the final cut. In the case of feature films or documentaries, they make rough cuts of wacky scenes during the shooting. You capture the mood of a film or contribution and select the scenes from several versions that underline this mood. They determine the narrative flow through the speed of the editing sequences. Since scenes are seldom shot in chronological order, new points of view for the narrative can arise during the assembly. From the first cut version, further versions are created in cooperation with the director or editorial team until the optimal version is achieved. This also includes sound design. The music for cinema films is usually composed by film music composers and recorded, for example, by an orchestra. For smaller productions, film editors research music archives and sound libraries and select sounds and music that they present to the director or editor. They combine visual and acoustic elements and check whether image and sound are in sync. After completion, they archive the image and sound material.

Mixing images for live broadcasts can also be part of their tasks.
