What is it about?

Landscape ecologists plan and design environmentally friendly concepts for land use for both agricultural and forestry areas and for protected areas.

Agreeing interests

They often work in the area of tension between nature and landscape conservation on the one hand and interests in use, e.g. through settlement, transport, agriculture and forestry on the other. Landscape ecologists are therefore involved in the planning and implementation of protective measures for nature and landscape as well as measures for sustainable use. They protect, maintain and develop nature and landscape in such a way that the performance and functionality of the natural balance is ensured.

Planning, balancing, monitoring

In nature conservation authorities, relevant associations or private planning offices, there are a wide range of tasks for landscape ecologists. For example, they develop species and habitat protection programs or create land use and regional development plans as well as development plans for protected areas. They analyze and evaluate environmental impacts, e.g. of planned large-scale construction projects such as power lines, and determine compensation and replacement measures, such as the creation of compensation areas. In addition, landscape ecologists develop concepts for the renaturation of river courses, the conversion of agricultural land, or they record and evaluate cultural-historical landscape elements and plan measures for tourist use.

In addition to planning activities, landscape ecologists also take on tasks in landscape monitoring and in the supervision and implementation of nature and landscape conservation. They record the current ecological state of the landscape and monitor possible changes. They also collect ecological and climatic parameters, record plant and biological species diversity as part of biodiversity research, examine the condition of soil and water and map biotopes.

Protect and inform

If they work in protected area administrations, they help to establish water and nature reserves, monitor compliance with legal regulations, e.g. by taking measurements in the laboratory, or ensure that species and biotope protection programs are implemented. If necessary, they also prepare reports and opinions, e.g. on the environmental impact of construction projects.

They plan environmental education measures and are also involved in their implementation, for example when they inform schools about species protection projects. Their specialist knowledge is also in demand when development cooperation projects are implemented as part of landscape and nature conservation measures or when concepts for environmentally and resource-friendly tourism are to be developed.
