In social work there are many different areas of application, such as child and youth work, senior work or adult education. Social workers and social pedagogues offer support and advice, especially in difficult living conditions and crisis situations, e.g. caused by unemployment, poverty in old age, divorce and housing loss, delinquency, sexual abuse, drug use or illness. Their tasks also lie in the support of individuals and groups in everyday life, for example in educational work within the framework of early childhood education or after-school and school social education.
The aim of child, youth and family aid is to help improve the living conditions of children, young people and their families. Social workers or social pedagogues record the respective situation and advise those affected on possible offers of help. This includes advice and support services, but also the provision of material help. For example, social workers or social pedagogues organize homework supervision, participation in social training or education courses or accommodation in a youth group or in a home. As part of the official guardianship, they also take over the guardianship for children and young people.

As street workers in open social work, they head for central contact points, emergency sleeping places and emergency apartments or "the street" in order to meet members of young street gangs, homeless people or prostitutes. After they are released, they support them in dealing with authorities and in finding work and accommodation.
Social workers or social pedagogues who work in case management determine the need for help for the person concerned and coordinate the cooperation of the people and institutions involved in the support. In addition to case management, which is about optimizing individual aid, you can also work in system management.
