Sound Engineer / Audio Engineer

Tonmeister/in / Toningenieur/in

Audio engineers and sound engineers accompany the entire manufacturing process from planning to execution to post-processing in acoustic and audiovisual media productions.

Responsibilities

Sound engineers or aidio engineers ensure a technically and artistically optimal recording and design of speech, music or noises. Sound engineers are in charge of the entire recording, while sound engineers are primarily responsible for the technical questions. Before production begins, sound engineers design the recording concept and work plans. You coordinate with the production management and musicians, e.g. to Clarify conception and production framework. They are responsible for the sound and music direction and editing for the recordings. They monitor the content components, such as text or note accuracy, rhythm, tempo, intonation, phrasing and harmonious interplay of the instruments. Together with sound engineers, they check the technical framework of the recording environment, e.g. the acoustics as well as the devices and systems available. Based on the agreement results, the sound engineers prepare the equipment and optimize the technical parameters. In order to achieve a good sound result, they e.g. Sound assistants in the optimal positioning of the microphones or take care to switch off background noises. They monitor and optimize the sound quality and assess the sound result. After the recording has been completed, sound engineers rework the sound material in consultation with the sound engineers. The sound engineers accept the entire recording from a technical and artistic point of view.

Typical Places of Work

Sound engineers and audio engineers primarily find employment

  • in recording studios, at broadcasters or film production companies
  • for service providers who provide sound technology in concert halls, opera and playhouses or at open-air concerts
  • with publishers for audio-visual media or with manufacturers of computer games

Why is?

Sound engineers and sound engineers accompany the entire manufacturing process from acoustic planning to execution and post-processing in acoustic and audiovisual media productions.

TV, film, radio, recording studios

Whether in the studio or in the OB van, sound engineers or sound engineers ensure that speech, music or noises are recorded correctly and transmitted clearly. Extensive preparations are required for successful sound recording. In the preparation phase e.g. For a film soundtrack, sound engineers or sound engineers work out a script with regard to the sound design and discuss this with the director and camera team. They also select the technical equipment and ensure that the devices and systems are ready for operation. To create a clear and balanced sound image, check the acoustics on site when recording outside of sound studios and ensure that the microphones are positioned accordingly. They take e.g. in music performances the style and interpretation of the work as well as the musical-acoustic properties of the instruments.

As part of the sound direction, they advise e.g. Directors and artists, themselves exert interpretative influence on recordings or take on the creative design independently. In order to realize predetermined and own artistic projects, sound engineers or sound engineers use means that go beyond the mere process of recording or transmission. In doing so, they weigh artistic requirements, technical implementation options and economic framework conditions against each other.

Recording and post-processing

During the actual production, they ensure that speech and noises with the respective devices, e.g. the Tonangel, sound assistants are professionally recorded. During the recording they continuously monitor the quality of the sound recordings and fit e.g. the volume on or eliminate technical problems.

In the post-processing phase, the end product is created from the different raw materials. Sound engineers or sound engineers monitor the sound editing and accompany the speech and music editing. Possibly. carry out the mixing according to the mixing plan of cutters. With fine hearing and technical empathy, they create the balance between the images, the language, the music and the sounds. If necessary, they record dramatically necessary additional tones or arrange for post-recordings. Finally, they check the technical implementation and the overall artistic result.
