Applied Computer Science, B.Sc.
Applied Computer Science looks into questions such as ...
- How does the systematic development of software work?
- How can we solve problems occurring in different area of application using the methods and processes of computer science?
- Which resources are required to have computers solve certain tasks?
- Which types of problems cannot be solved by a machine within a reasonable period of time?
- How can software projects be planned, managed and controlled?

Will I get in
The programme has an admission restriction: the average grade of your certificate, converted to the German scale, decides. The cut-off changes every year — last year's value shows the order of magnitude, not a promise.
How the selection works and how strong the competition is — we go through it against your certificate when we select programmes for you.
Programme selection →About the programme
Computer science is everywhere: Like almost no other science, it permeates almost all areas of our lives. And even where nobody sees it - hidden in smartphones, household appliances, robot controls or cars - it directs, regulates, measures and warns them. Computer science enables smaller and smaller products, faster and faster processes. The computer science problems to be solved become more complex and extensive. Consequently, specialized knowledge from many different disciplines is needed.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum, with its twenty faculties, offers ideal conditions for students to acquire this knowledge in order to solve such complex IT problems. The study of applied computer science offers not only the theoretical foundations of computer science and mathematics, but also a broad range of training in computer science applications. The aim of the study is to impart structural thinking and knowledge acquisition skills as a basis.
What you study
In the first semesters, basic knowledge in computer science and mathematics will be acquired. This includes the learning of different programming languages such as the development of hardware-related topics, the handling of data structures and the analysis of algorithms. Economic aspects are also on the timetable.
The full curriculum and the programme's parameters are part of programme selection: we compare them with your profile.
Pick programmesCareer
The degree program Applied Computer Science covers with its fields of study precisely those areas of education that are urgently sought in the industry. For the graduates of the degree program, therefore, there are excellent career prospects in the coming years.

In many industries in our economy, such as in information technology, in telecommunications, in the automotive industry or in the banking and insurance industries, computer scientists make a significant contribution to technical progress. In software companies and system houses, computer scientists develop multimedia applications, plan networks or optimize operating systems. P> In addition, applied computer scientists often work in "foreign" areas, such as manufacturing or banking. There are also various fields of application in the automotive industry. In applied research, applied computer scientists are setting new trends in promising technologies, such as WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network).
The impact of informatics applications in so-called secondary industries such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, vehicle construction, telecommunications and financial services is constantly increasing. According to information from the Federal Employment Agency, in addition to IT skills, specialist skills of other degree programs are often in demand.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | A school certificate that gives access to university in Germany — directly or after a Studienkolleg. |
|---|---|
| Application | winter semester until 15.07 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 3Application until 15.07Send the documents well before the deadline — an incomplete application cannot be completed after it.
- 4Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
