Preparation for a bachelor's in Germany
If your school-leaving certificate is not recognised as equal to the German one, the way to a bachelor's goes through a preparatory year. There are four options: a state Studienkolleg (free, but with an entrance exam and competition), a private Studienkolleg (paid, more frequent intakes, the same FSP exam), and a Foundation Year in English or German (paid, access usually to partner universities). They differ not by price but by where you can study afterwards.
First check whether you need a preparatory year
For some countries the certificate gives direct access after one or two years at a university at home, and sometimes straight away. Then a Studienkolleg or a Foundation Year is an extra year and extra money. This is decided by the status of your certificate in the recognition database, not by preference.
Four paths: how they really differ
The main row is “where it gives access”. Everything else is secondary: a cheap path that does not lead to the programme you need is the most expensive one.
| State Studienkolleg | Private Studienkolleg | Foundation in English | Foundation in German | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Where it gives access | All universities in Germany, within the course profile | The same — if the FSP is taken before a state board | Usually only the programme's partner universities | The organising university and its partners |
| Final exam | FSP at the college | FSP, often before an external board | The programme's own exams | The programme's own exams or the FSP |
| Language | German, B1–B2 on entry | German, B1 on entry | English, IELTS 5.0–5.5 | German, B1 on entry |
| Cost | Free — only the semester contribution | €2,700–5,600 per semester | Tuition fee | Tuition fee |
| Admission | Entrance exam, competition | Placement test, places are usually available | By documents and language | By documents and a test |
| Intakes | 1–2 times a year, strict deadline | Twice a year | 2–3 times a year | 1–2 times a year |
| Who it suits | You have time and German B2, and the price matters | You did not pass the competition or need the nearest start | No German; the goal is an English-taught bachelor's at a partner university | The goal is one specific organising university |
| State colleges and courses → | Private colleges and courses → |
Before paying for a Foundation Year, check the list of universities that accept it and whether your programme is among them. This is the main source of disappointment: the course is completed, but the programme you need does not accept it.

At partner colleges we book a place at the college's own price and follow the application until enrolment. State colleges are on the list too — for them we handle the application as a service.
Not enough German for the entrance exam?
A Studienkolleg usually asks for German B1–B2, and the certificate has to be there by the application deadline. If your level is not enough yet, start with an intensive course and exam preparation — the application dates are in the intakes above.
