Applied Computer Science, B.Sc.
The study program Applied Computer Science at the University of Bayreuth teaches basic skills in both practical and theoretical computer science. He is enriched by courses in mathematics and application. In order to be able to successfully solve complex problems with methods of computer science, a deeper understanding of the relevant application is required.

Programme selection →About the programme
The following three focal points are offered alternatively to each other, one of which is to be selected at the beginning of the study: bioinformatics, engineering computer science and environmental computer science. Courses in these areas are competently covered by other institutes or faculties. By doing so, students learn to understand the terminology of the chosen field of study and can thus successfully design and implement their application systems.
What you study
The Bachelor is a professional qualification that enables graduates to systematically solve problems in the application fields of biotechnology, engineering and environmental sciences through the use of computer science methods. To achieve this goal, the study is divided into three phases, which may overlap in time:

Pick programmesCareer
After graduation, graduates have numerous career prospects in industry, medium-sized businesses or public administration. In addition, they can acquire the "Master of Science" in Applied Computer Science or Computer Science at the University of Bayreuth in further four-semester Masters courses. The occupational fields in biotechnology, engineering and environmental computer science are of particular interest to Bayreuth graduates.

- Careers in bioinformatics are diverse and are in the pharmaceutical industry (drug design), in biotech companies (protein design), in specialized software companies (eg in the development of automated analysis techniques) , in service companies, in the development and maintenance of databases in major research facilities, medical data analysis and academic research.
- The importance of Engineering Informatics has grown steadily in recent years. In classical engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or process engineering, computers are used for controlling and monitoring technical systems, for production and production planning, for computer-aided design, for modeling and simulation etc.
- Careers in Environmental Informatics are in research, government and business. In addition to the collection, storage and evaluation of data on ecosystems, modeling and simulation are the focus of environmental computer science. As examples of occupational fields may be mentioned: environmental monitoring on the system to be protected, prevention of hazardous substances, production process monitoring and basic and applied research.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | A school certificate that gives access to university in Germany — directly or after a Studienkolleg. |
|---|---|
| Language | German B2 — confirmed by a certificate when you apply |
| Application | Via uni-assist, winter semester until 15.07, summer semester until 15.01 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to B2 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application via uni-assist until 15.01uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
