Data Science, B.Sc.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are the topics of the future. They are based on mathematical calculations and statistical methods whose potential is far from exhausted, as data is now available in vast quantities and in virtually every area of life. The series suggestions on your Netflix watchlist? The weather forecast for the next 10 days? The image recognition on your smartphone? All of this is based on the structured analysis of data and the targeted training of neural networks.
The new Data Science degree program teaches the fundamentals of machine learning and other current data analysis methods, as well as the ability to efficiently implement these methods using modern software technologies. It teaches knowledge from the fields of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and data science. As you progress through your studies, you can choose one of six specializations and thus specifically study the application area that matches your career goals. Thanks to the English-language focus of our program and the international contacts you can make at KU, you will be well-prepared for the international job market!

Will I get in
Admission goes through an aptitude assessment: the university checks how well the subjects, credits and grades of your previous education fit the programme. There is no fixed cut-off — the assessment is comparative.
How the selection works and how strong the competition is — we go through it against your certificate when we select programmes for you.
Programme selection →What you study
The program imparts the fundamental knowledge of data science from the fields of mathematics, statistics, and computer science, supplementing this with interdisciplinary courses in the field of data science.
The full curriculum and the programme's parameters are part of programme selection: we compare them with your profile.

We offer an innovative and modern degree program. Data scientists are urgently needed due to the immensely growing volumes of data, especially in industry. During your studies, you can choose a specialization, for example, in the areas of business analysis, social development, environmental and geosciences, or financial systems.
Thanks to the English-language orientation of our degree program, you will be prepared for the international job market!
Data science is fundamental to the digital transformation process of the coming decades. The environment and industry will increasingly be permeated by networked information systems and data-collecting devices; in order to derive value from this, the resulting data must be analyzed using modern methods. This creates a need for well-trained data scientists who can solve these challenges using new technologies and methods (such as machine learning methods in artificial intelligence) in industries, business, startups, and the public sector.
Graduates are needed who possess strong analytical thinking skills and the ability to implement algorithms, while also being aware of the responsibility involved in processing sensitive data, including the impartiality and objectivity of the algorithms.
Possible career fields for all profiles in the program include:
- Specialist and management positions in fields related to data science and information technology in national and international companies and organizations,
- Cross-disciplinary tasks in the field of machine learning, data analysis, and forecasting, consulting activities in these areas,
- Academic background in mathematics, data science, and application areas.
Requirements and application
| Previous education | Basic mathematical understanding Analytical thinking Fun and enjoyment of complex problems and the desire to develop technical solutions for them For international students: German A2 after the first year of study |

The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 3Application via uni-assist until 15.07uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 4Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
