Electrical Engineering, Auto-created Degree dipling
If you would like to help shape one of the key technologies for sustainable technical progress, then the electrical engineering degree is just right for you! The degree in electrical engineering at TU Dresden combines all of the contents of the Bachelor and Master’s degree and combines these with other skills in a classic diploma degree. We made a conscious decision to retain the academic degree of qualified engineer (Dipl.-Ing.): Graduated engineers enjoy a very good reputation and have excellent career prospects in industry and business. The graduate engineer is at least equivalent to the master’s degree: We confirm this to our graduates with a certificate. They are given a well-known and proven seal of quality, which ideally prepares them for industrial and scientific professional activities.

Human-machine interaction, modern energy systems, sensors and sensor systems, biomedical technology, information and entertainment electronics, electromobility - these are just a few examples of the numerous specialist areas in electrical engineering. Products and developments in electrical engineering are omnipresent, contained in many things in everyday life and have become indispensable in many areas. Everyday life without electrical and electronic devices is hardly imaginable these days. Electrical engineering, and in particular electrical energy engineering, is central to the new solutions that are urgently needed in the energy transition by 2050, the resource-neutral coverage of our entire social energy needs. Electrical energy is therefore the most important resource in our society. Their environmentally friendly, efficient generation, transmission and optimized use in devices is a central task in electrical engineering and the most important lifeline for a sustainable lifestyle in a modern society.

Electrical engineering includes all processes that deal with the generation, use and distribution of electricity. Electrical engineers develop devices and processes based on electrical energy. Electrical engineering uses electrical and electromagnetic phenomena and laws for technical applications. How is electricity created? How is it transmitted from one place to another? How can we use it? How does a smartphone work? How is a power plant supplied with electricity? - Just a few of the many questions that electrical engineering deals with. For some time now, electrical engineering has been increasingly shaped by information technology, communications engineering, communication technology and microelectronics, and computer science is also becoming increasingly important.
What you study
The course comprises a four-semester basic course, which is the same for all students, and a main course structured according to fields of study. In addition, through elective courses, students have the opportunity to customize their training to a large extent according to their interests and inclinations.
Basic studies (1st to 4th semester)
During the basic course, students learn the basics of: electrical engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, computer science and microcomputing, system theory, automation and measurement technology, electrical energy engineering, device development, materials and technical mechanics, microelectronics and communications engineering.
Main course (5th to 10th semester)
In the 5th semester, students choose one of the following fields of study:
For those interested in robotics: automation, measurement and control technology
If you want to help shape the future of human-machine interaction, this field of study is perfect for you! Here you gain know-how about robotics and industrial automation technology. In addition, through modeling and simulation, you will learn how measuring systems and automation systems are designed and configured.
For world savers: electrical energy technology
If you are wondering how we can protect our environment in the future and at the same time meet our energy needs, this field of study offers you knowledge and methods with which you can work on sustainable energy solutions. You will learn how regenerative energies are used efficiently, how to ensure a reliable energy supply and how energy-saving power electronics as well as electrical machines and drives are planned.
For inventors: device, micro and medical technology
This field of study is perfect for everyone who is fascinated by the latest technologies and at the same time wants to create creative solutions in their job that help people and improve their lives in the long term. Here students learn how assemblies and devices are developed and designed so that they can be operated in an energy-saving and reliable manner and adapted to the respective application, such as portable electronics in / on people or in medical and sensor electronics, control and drive electronics in electric vehicles , Processor or memory technology in the computer system.
For communication visionaries: information technology
How we will communicate with one another and find information in the future will be determined by engineers who have specialized in information technology. You develop information and entertainment electronics, acoustics and communication technologies of the future.
For game changers: microelectronics
Students in this field of study deal with new types of electronics materials and thus determine the properties and possible uses of the electronics of the future. You develop innovative optoelectronic and micromechanical components, integrated circuits, as well as sensors and sensor systems.
The full curriculum and the programme's parameters are part of programme selection: we compare them with your profile.
Pick programmesCareer
Since electrical engineering shapes all areas and technologies of the modern world, the need for qualified electrical engineers is correspondingly high and increasing continuously. This trend is technologically based and will continue. That is why graduates of the electrical engineering degree expect excellent future prospects in an exciting, varied profession.

The breadth of the specialist areas in electrical engineering is reflected in the diversity of potential fields of work. From chip factories to optics companies, from power plants to mechanical engineering companies, from automobile manufacturers to chemical factories, in the manufacturing and process industry or the mobile communications and telecommunications industry: Depending on the focus of their studies, graduates can work in a wide variety of industries such as information and communication technology, vehicle technology, Medical technology, energy technology or the semiconductor industry. Depending on their personal preferences and inclinations, the electrical engineers can freely choose whether they want to work in research, development, project planning, production or sales.
The participation of students in international research projects is an integral part of the electrical engineering degree and offers the opportunity to earn additional income in the context of exciting and subject-related activities. This enables graduates to make a seamless transition to a doctorate (doctoral degree) or a good start into professional life after completing their studies.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | To refresh and supplement school knowledge, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology offers the engineering sciences preparatory course lasting several weeks. |
|---|---|
| Language | German C1 — confirmed by a certificate when you apply |
| Application | Via uni-assist, winter semester until 15.07 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to C1 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application via uni-assist until 15.07uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
