Physics, B.Sc.
Physics is the basis of all natural sciences up to and including medicine. It has the task of experimentally exploring the laws of the world in all their complexity and diversity from the unimaginably small scale of elementary particles to the immense scale of the universe, to grasp them theoretically and, if possible, to show applications. The concrete problems that physics deals with experimentally and theoretically change over time, as the experimental and theoretical requirements must always be met in order to be able to address certain questions in a satisfactory manner. This dynamic aspect guarantees that physics is a constantly evolving science that succeeds in deciphering the fundamental mechanisms of increasingly complex natural processes using modern methods. The constant further development of experimental and theoretical methods in physics means that more and more new areas of nature are becoming accessible to scientific research - areas that lie beyond the limits of traditional physics. It is increasingly possible to elucidate fundamental physical mechanisms that can only be described phenomenologically in related sciences such as chemistry, biology and medicine.

Programme selection →About the programme
Physics therefore fulfills a central bridging function among the natural sciences in a special way. The Faculty of Physics at LMU has therefore consistently set itself the goal of researching the physical principles of scientific processes. With this orientation, physics at the LMU is positioned complementarily to the orientation of other institutions where the application aspect or technical usability is clearly in the foreground.

Studying physics also means dealing with technologies today that will only be used in the future. In this respect, physics training makes a decisive contribution to not only enabling young people to find their way in the information and knowledge society, but also actively helping to shape and develop it further.
What you study
The course is designed over six semesters, divided into a basic and a specialization phase. It concludes with the creation of a qualification thesis.

Pick programmesCareer
The physicist's profession is characterized by the great variety of possible work areas. In industry, physicists mainly work in research and development, sales and marketing, controlling and, moreover, in strategic fields such as management consulting and management.

Physicists work in a wide variety of research areas at state and semi-state institutes; They are also required, for example, in environmental protection, especially in radiation protection, in medical technology, in patents and documentation, and in science administration.
You work in research and advice in areas in which physical thinking and measuring methods are applied, such as astronomy, meteorology, geophysics, oceanography, chemistry, biology, materials science, medical technology, data processing, as well as medical physicists at the clinics, mostly in a team Graduates from other disciplines.
Last but not least, they are also responsible for teaching this subject at technical colleges and universities; Physicists are also employed in other teaching-related fields of activity, such as in-house training or adult education, but also in science journalism.
Due to their broad training, the physicists are predestined for employment in non-subject areas in which either no training courses of their own exist yet or in which the needs cannot be met by those trained in this area. In the past such areas were e.g. B. Electrical engineering, physical chemistry, biophysics and computer science. Last but not least, physicists are needed where scientific questions arise that cannot be solved using conventional procedures and methods.
The rapidly developing information technology demands a highly qualified workforce. Physicists are familiar with these technologies and therefore have excellent career prospects; however, they are currently not being trained in the necessary numbers, as the industry constantly complains.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | Curiosity about the deeper interrelationships of nature, a disposition for logical-mathematical thinking, creativity, happy to work in a group and also like to work on a problem alone and to be determined, motivated and persistent - these are essential prerequisites for studying physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University. |

| Application | Directly to the university, winter semester until 15.07 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 3Application directly to the university until 15.07Send the documents well before the deadline — an incomplete application cannot be completed after it.
- 4Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
