Art History

University of Stuttgart

Undergraduate Winter Semester

The subject studied in art history is European-American fine arts and visual culture from Late Antiquity to the present. Included besides architecture, sculpture, painting, graphics, and artisan craftwork are new and avant garde media, such as photography, film, and video as well as art forms like performance and room installations.
The study program mediates a comprehensive knowledge of these areas and the specialized terminology that comes with them. In addition, it will impart the ability to analyze and interpret works of art and other visual creations independently and critically regarding provenance, form, content, and meaning. Fundamental for this is a thoughtful interaction with the research literature, with the sources and with scientific working methods.
