Technische Universität Berlin

Undergraduate Winter Semester

The development of mineral fertilizers, the production of plastics, the active principle of medicines - all these are facets of chemistry. Chemistry is the science of building and changing matter: Chemistry is divided into Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, Physical, Technical and Theoretical Chemistry, but there are also a number of relatively independent disciplines, such as: Biochemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Medical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Environmental Chemistry and more.

Some of the most interesting developments in the field of chemistry are currently taking place in areas where several of these areas are involved. The trend towards interdisciplinary research and teaching will become increasingly important in the future. Chemistry has a strong integrating character for neighboring disciplines such as physics, biology, materials science, geology and engineering. It is for future developments in areas such as of medicine, nanotechnology or functional materials. It thus covers a central area of the modern knowledge society. The study of chemistry thus provides core competencies for a future-oriented scientific activity.
