A research-oriented master's program at the University of Regensburg offering four distinct specialisation tracks — from Bioinformatics and Human-Centred Computing to Information Systems and core Computer Science — taught entirely in English within the Faculty of Informatics and Data Science.
The Computer Science master's program at the University of Regensburg is designed to give graduates deep scientific and methodological competence in both the theoretical foundations and applied dimensions of modern computer science. Housed in the Faculty of Informatics and Data Science, the program combines rigorous coursework with independent research, preparing students to work at the frontier of the discipline or to pursue an academic career.
The curriculum is structured around a flexible specialisation model. Students choose one of four focus areas — core Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Human-Centred Computing, or Information Systems — and build their module selection around it. This freedom allows each student to develop a genuine area of expertise rather than following a fixed track. Compulsory modules provide the shared scientific foundation, while elective modules and the master's thesis allow for deep specialisation.
The program places strong emphasis on independent scientific work. From early semesters, students engage with current research literature and methodologies. The master's thesis in the final phase of the program is a substantial independent research project carried out under the supervision of a faculty member, culminating in a written thesis and defense.
Instruction is entirely in English, making the program accessible to international students and reflecting the global nature of the IT research community. Both full-time and part-time study modes are available, providing flexibility for students with other commitments.
The program admits students twice per year — in the winter and summer semesters — which is less common among German master's programs and gives applicants more scheduling options. Admission involves a qualification assessment (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren) that evaluates the academic suitability of each applicant's prior degree.
