Medical Radiation Sciences

Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen

Graduate Winter Semester

The master's program in Medical Radiation Sciences is an ideal choice for students with a physically or biologically oriented bachelor's degree who are interested in in-depth application or research-oriented training in the field of medical radiation science. The degree program integrates the excellent research areas of the Medical Faculty in the areas of radiation therapy and radio-oncology, medical physics, non-invasive imaging as well as cellular and molecular tumor and radiation biology. The courses are offered by renowned scientists from the field of basic research as well as clinical research and enable a deep insight into the field of interdisciplinary medical radiation science.

Profile area "Medical Physics Expert (MPE)"

Medical physics experts are postgraduate, officially recognized specialists for physical tasks in radiological subjects in medicine (medical radiation physics, nuclear medicine, radiological diagnostics, radiation therapy, radiology). The training to become a medical physics expert must be carried out as a practical activity (“expertise period”) in approved clinics and lasts 2 years.

At the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen, this two-year postgraduate training in combination with the Master's program in Medical Radiation Sciences will provide additional scientific training leading to the M.Sc. in Medical Radiation Sciences.

The course content fulfills all requirements of the German supervisory authorities for the knowledge of MPE as well as the broader requirements of the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP) and the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP)

Typical work tasks of a medical physics expert (MPE):

  • the optimization of radiation application and patient dosimetry
  • the elaboration of the physical part of the radiation planning
  • structural and technical radiation protection
  • Development of new examination and treatment methods
  • Quality assurance and quality control
  • the equipment of clinical areas
  • MTA instruction in device operation In Europe, especially in Germany, there is a shortage of trained medical physics experts. Graduates have excellent career prospects. The range of positions ranges from medical care facilities to the medical technology industry.

Profile area "Biomedical Radiation Research"

In the context of the development of personalized medicine, there is a constantly growing need for excellently trained young scientists, particularly in the field of oncological radiation research. In the "Biomedical Radiation Research" profile area, students are specifically prepared for research activities and subject areas that enable them to gain knowledge regarding basic questions on the one hand and translational aspects of the transfer of basic knowledge into clinical application on the other.

The course content is based on current and future foreseeable problems of basic, translational and experimental clinical research. This ensures that students who see their professional future as medical radiation scientists more in the field of research are guaranteed training that is based on the current state of research and enables them to pursue a professional career in a wide range of research institutions in the field of medical radiation science.
